Intuition: Learning to Listen to Your Inner Voice
Have you ever felt drawn towards a particular choice before you could explain why? Perhaps you sensed that you needed more time, or noticed something about a situation that others seemed to miss.
We often call this intuition: an impression that arrives before we have consciously worked through all the reasons behind it. Some people understand intuition spiritually, while others see it as drawing on experience and subtle observations.
Either way, exploring it can begin with paying closer attention to yourself.
Make Space to Listen
It can be difficult to notice your own response when you are busy gathering everyone else’s opinions.
Start with a few quiet minutes. Put your phone aside, take a comfortable breath and ask yourself: “What am I noticing about this situation?”
You do not need to force an answer. Write down any thoughts, feelings or questions that arise.
Treat Intuition as a Prompt
An intuitive feeling can invite you to investigate something. If a conversation leaves you uneasy, ask what you noticed. Was there pressure, an inconsistency or a boundary being crossed?
If an opportunity excites you, explore why. Does it fit your values? What practical information would help you decide?
Intuition can contribute to a decision alongside evidence, experience and advice.
Practise With Small Choices
Try noticing your preferences in everyday situations: which creative activity appeals to you, whether you need company or quiet, or which task you feel ready to begin.
Keep a journal of your impressions and revisit them later. Record the occasions when they were helpful and when they were mistaken. Both can teach you something.
You Do Not Have to Be Certain
There is no foolproof feeling that separates intuition from fear, hope or assumption. A calm impression can still be wrong, and an uncomfortable feeling can have a practical explanation.
Listening to yourself means giving your impressions thoughtful attention while allowing room to reconsider.
This week, try asking: “What is my first response—and what else do I need to know?”
